Tips For Clearing Acne

Don’t lie. If you have acne prone skin like myself, you’ve most likely spent hours upon hours, searching for a cure for clear skin.

Not only are the spots painful themselves, it also is a massive self-esteem killer.

I have only recently started managing to clear up my skin after years and years of trying, and wanted to share my tips with you. Everyone’s different, and their acne can be caused by a lot of different things, but these are the things that worked for me. They’re worth giving a go, hey?

  1. Don’t Just Wash Your Face!

I’m not one of those people who change their entire bedding every other day. I never will be. But changing your pillow cases every night or every other night will cause you to see a massive difference in your skin. Let say you change your entire bedding once a week. You’re then having your face pressed up against your pillows for 56 hours (saying that you sleep for 8 hours every night) which are now full of sweat, dirt, dead skin cells and god knows what else. Get changing them cases! This also goes for makeup brushes, towels, and phones too. Think about all the bacteria that grow on them bad boys! Basically, number one rule is to wash everything frequently that will come in contact with your skin.
  2. Meditate!
I know, I know. It’s almost like I can see your confused faces through the computer screen right now. But, with the stress of deadlines, family, and money, your skin can also go into complete meltdown. You then stress more about how your skin is looking bad, meaning more spots. Stress = spots. Time to get out the yoga mat.

  3. Drink Up!
I really do hate myself for saying this one. Every time I have asked my friends how they achieved the skin from the gods, all I ever hear is “Honestly, it’s just water!”. For me, drinking 2/3 litres of water a day does have a massive effect on my skin. Give it ago. If it doesn’t do your skin any good, it will still definitely do your body some good! I personally like to try to stick to just water, but teas, squashes and fruit juices all count! Just watch the sugar levels in your drinks, as theses also can effect your skin!
  4. Don’t Touch!
This was honestly the hardest one for me to do. Whilst sitting at a desk or table, I would constantly sit with my face leaning on my hand. Again, think of how much bacteria is on your hands, which is now all over your face. Gross. Secondly, try as hard as you can to NOT pick at your spots (I’m not going to say don’t pop because I honestly do this every time a white head pops up). It causes them to open up and allow even more bacteria to enter, and can even cause them to scar. You might think it makes them look better, or even disappear faster, but you won’t be a happy bunny when you’ve finally cleared up all your acne, to be left with scars everywhere.
  5. Cut Down On The Face Cake!
This was something I decided to do just over a year ago. It wasn’t intentional. I LOVED doing a full face of makeup everyday, including 7 makeup products on my face (not including eyes) ALONE, and 9 times out of 10, I would fall asleep with it on, wipe it off in the morning, and then re-apply. It was only when I started working more, meaning I often slept in later the next day, so I didn’t have time to do my normal routine. I started to see a huge difference in my skin, and now I don’t wear any at all. I know this can be quite daunting for some people, as we use makeup to cover imperfections up, but I promise you’ll live without it.
  6. Stick With It!
I LOVE to buy new skin care products. My bathroom drawers are full to the brim with different lotions and potions. I remember one time when I was younger, I just started to learn about a skin care products. I honestly think I brought the whole of Superdrug, and slavered every product on my face. Needless to say, I didn’t wake up with the beautiful skin I had hoped for. Anyway, if you’ve tried a new skincare product, and haven’t seen a difference yet, it’s likely because you’ve been using it less than 6 weeks. The reason is that your skin needs to do a full cycle of skin cell turnover before you start to see any changes. It sounds like a long time, but it’ll be worth it if you only have to wait 6 weeks to then have a spot free life. If it isn’t working after the 6 weeks. Bin it.
  7. Wash Away That Grub!
Obvious, I know. But without washing your face morning and night, you’re just allowing all the sweat and germs that are on your face to penetrate into your skin, causing a big ol’ spot or two. If you’re forgetful or spend a lot of time in bed, keep cleansing wipes on your bedside table. You’ve got no excuse then!
  8. Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate!
The word that brought terror to run in my veins. I (stupidly) thought when I was younger, that exfoliating would just wreck your skin! Don’t get me wrong, it can if you’re scrubbing to harshly or too often, but exfoliating 3 times a week will actually improve the look and feel of your skin. Not only will it take off them dead skin cells, making your skin feel like a babies bum, but it also will clear down into your pores, removing all the dirt and grime that’s made home in them! Time for them to evacuate! Also, make sure you follow me to see my upcoming DIY face scrub post!
  9. Soften Yourself Up!
Okay… You’ll learn in this post that I knew NOTHING about how to care for skin when I was younger. I used to slaver on layer after layer of thick, heavy moisturiser. This only caused my skin to clog up and break out! Find a moisturiser that suits your skin type, and apply a pea sized amount to your face and neck!
  10. Mask That Skin!
Face masks are my one true love. Not only are they very relaxing, but they have many, many different ones on the market for different skin types and for different purposes. Try finding one that contains tea-tree oil, which is a natural acne killer. Click here to see how to make your very own facial masks!
  11. Rock A Ponytail!
Keep your hair out of your face! All the hairspray, dry shampoo and just plain dirt will transfer over from your hair, onto your face. Sleep with your hair up, either in a pony tail or a bun to make sure you’re eliminating reasons for your skin to break out!
  12. See A Dermatologist!
If you feel like you’ve tried every trick in the book, and nothing is helping, book yourself an appointment with a dermatologist. They may be able to help prescribe pills and potions that you can’t buy over the counter.

So, there you have it! My tricks for (almost) clear skin! Try not to beat yourself up about not having perfect skin. Even your favourite celebrity gets spots, but we don’t always get to see that since they have Photoshop on their side.

Let me know your favourite skin care tips and products!
