REVIEW: Dr. Botanicals Tropical Invigorating Cream

I recently got sent this moisturiser from Dr. Botanicals, and I will admit that I did have my worries about it.

I found out recently that people with oily skin should stay away from cream moisturisers, and go for a gel moisturiser instead. After swapping my moisturiser to the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Moisturiser and seeing a HUGE improvment to my skin, I was unsure on how my skin would react. Would it break out? Would it become more oily? Who knew. Only time would tell…

Price

As I write this, the moisturiser is currently in the sale, from £39.99 down to £19.90.

Ingredients

Aqua (water), Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Glycerin, Glyceryl Strearate SE, Cetearyl Alcohol, Strearic Acid, Cocos Nucifera (coconut) oil, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Extract, Isoceteth-20, Phenoxyethanol, Polyacrylamide, Benzyl Alcohol, Carbomer, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Sodium Hydroxide, Tocopherol, Laureth-7, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Dehydroacetic Acid, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Extract, Lecithin, Avena Stringosa Seed Extract, Gardenia Tahitensis (Tiare) Flower Extract, Parfum (Fragrance), Sambucus Nigra Flower Extract, Benzyl Salicylate, Potassium Sorbate, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Sodium Benzoate.

The main active ingredients in the formulation are:

1) Elderflower: Aims to protect the skin from free radical damage.
2) Chamomile Flower Extract: Works to heal and soothe irritated and damaged skin.
3) Tiare Flower Extract: Aims to deeply moisturise, nourish and purify the skin.

Packaging

The packaging reminds me a lot of the L’occitane hand cream…

The pretty tube is decorated with green leaves and pink flowers, with the infomation and brand name printed on a duck egg background.

Comparing this to the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Moisturiser, I have to say that I prefer the design on this one. As much as I like the Neutrogena packaging, I hate the fact that you have to dunk your fingers into the product, meaning that you’re contaminating the whole tub with germs. With this, you can easily squeeze out the right amount, without effecting the whole product.

Performance

After following my usual skincare routine, I then went ahead and applied this all over my face and down my neck.

Straight away I noticed how quickly this sunk in, even though it has more of a thicker consistency.

My skin felt really hydrated and plump – something that I hadn’t felt in a while.

The big deal breaker for me was going to be if this broke me out or changed how much oil my face produces.

I wanted to give this a far shot, so after using this for 3 weeks straight, I finally have made my mind up.

Does this break me out? Maybe. I’m still undecided. Whilst my skin hasn’t had a large amount of acne appear, my skin definitely isn’t as clear as it was before using this.

Does this make me more oily? Yes. At first, I didn’t seem to notice a massive change, but as time went on, I definitely saw that my makeup was slipping off my face a lot faster than before. I mean, my face isn’t no where near as bad as it could be, but it is still a little bit too much than I wanted.IMG_0003

Even after coming to realise that this breaks me out and makes me more oily, I’ve decided to keep hold of this for now. Whilst I’ve gone back to my old moisturiser, I still like to use this when my skin feels like it needs a good drink – especially in the winter time. Also, since it took a while for me to notice any more spots and oil, using this once a week seems to work just fine for me.

Since I’m not going to be using it daily, I know this is going to last me a really long time.

Have you tried any of the Dr. Botanicals range?
