I Put 3 Different Detox/Weight Loss Products To The Test – Is It All Just A Scam?

I was recently contacted by the lovely Angela from Superdrug, asking if I would like to test out 3 new detox products – Bootea Fruity Teatox, Slendertoxtea Detox Coffee and Slendertoxtea Skinny Coffee. Since it was only just Christmas, I’ve been eating a hell of a lot of the wrong things – chocolates, sweets and pretty much any junk food I could get my hands on, so I thought now would be the perfect time to give my body a detox.

To see if the products themselves actually did anything for me, I decided to stick to my normal diet, and not work out. Can these products actually help us lose weight, whilst not being on a diet or working out?

Bootea 14 Day Fruity Teatox – Sunshine Berry Edition – £19.99

I’m sure that by now, you either have tried Bootea yourself, or know someone who has. Bootea is a brand which now not only sells one of the worlds best-selling teatox, but now also sells vitamins, porridge, shakes and more.

I’ll be honest and say that I have used Bootea a few years back, but since it was such a long time ago, I’ve forgotten what I thought of it. I do remember one thing and that is that when first starting out on Bootea, make sure you’re nearby a toilet…

In the 14 day teatox box, you receive 14 daytime tea bags, and 7 bedtime tea bags. The idea is to drink one of the daytime teas every morning, and then the bedtime teas every other night. There are also 21 day versions of this aswell – supposedly, the longer you’re on the tea, the better results.

The two teas both have different flavours – the daytime tea being Sunshine Berry (Hibiscus tea with berry flavourings) and the nighttime tea being Manuka Honey & Almond (Rooibos tea with honey and nut flavouring).

WARNING – IT HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR TEATOX TEAS TO REDUCE THE STRENGTH OF THE CONTRACEPTIVE PILL AND WOMEN HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO FALL PREGNANT WHILST DRINKING BOOTEA. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO USE OTHER SOURCES OF CONTRACEPTION WHILST USING ANY DETOX PRODUCTS.

Ingredients

Daytime Tea – Hibiscus, Apple Pieces, Rosehip, Fennel, Lemongrass, Nettle, Yerba Mate, Dandelion Leaves, Gotu Kola, Siberia Ginseng, Natural Flavouring.

  • Hibiscus – Known for lowing blood pressure, lowering cholesterol, protecting the liver, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, helps with menstrual pain, antidepressant properties, aids digestion, saturates thirst and weight loss. I also found out that it can sometimes cause people to hallucinate, so please keep that in mind if you’re thinking of trying this out.
  • Rosehip – Known for cancer-fighting properties, immune-boosting activities and potentially disease-preventing properties.

  • Fennel – Known for helping with heartburn, improving digestion, helps cope with colic, burns fat, improves eye health and strengthens the heart.
  • Lemongrass – Known for helping with digestion, full of antioxidants, regulates high blood pressure, boost metabolism, burns fat, helps clear acne and helps with menstrual pain.
  • Nettle – Known for hair growth, helps clear acne and eczema, improves kidney health, helps with digestion, boost immune system, relieves pain and reduces inflammation.
  • Yerba Mate – Known for improving energy, boost mental function, loaded with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, weight loss, improves immune system, kills cancer cells and helps keep the heart healthy.
  • Dandelion Leaves – Known for improving digestion, weight loss, improves liver health, reduces UTIs, helps with bloating and help with skin conditions.
  • Gotu Kola – Known for improving circulation, helping with depression and anxiety, helps kill cancer cells, repairs skin and reduces inflammation.
  • Siberia Ginseng – Known for boosting immune system, controlling blood pressure, increase appetite and helping with Fibromyalgia and M.E symptoms.

After looking at all the ingredients, it’s clear that a lot of them have the same benefits – weight loss and helping with digestion. I’m not 100% sure why they included Siberia Ginseng in the tea, as one of the benefits is that it increases your appetite, and usually with detox teas, they try to use ingredients that depress your appetite.

I was also really interested to see that a lot of the ingredients were known for helping with menstrual pain. As someone who suffered from Endometriosis, this was a big thumbs up for me.

Evening Tea – Rooibos, Desiccated Coconut, Fennel, Liquorice, Chamomile, Milk Thistle Leaves, Gotu Kola, Siberian Ginseng, Natural Flavouring.

  • Rooibos – Known for lowing blood pressure, improving bone health, improves acne, prevents kidney stones and has anti-aging properties.
  • Fennel – Known for helping with heartburn, improving digestion, helps cope with colic, burns fat, improves eye health and strengthens the heart.
  • Liquorice – Known for soothing upset stomach, reliving cold and flu symptoms and soothes eczema and psoriasis.
  • Chamomile – Known for helping with insomnia, reduces menstrual pain, reducing stress, boosts immune system and has anti-aging properties.
  • Milk Thistle Leaves – Known for helping to treat liver conditions, promotes weight loss, helps asthma symptoms, lowers cholesterol, helps diabetes and improves the immune system.
  • Gotu Kola – Known for improving circulation, helping with depression and anxiety, helps kill cancer cells, repairs skin and reduces inflammation.
  • Siberia Ginseng – Known for boosting immune system, controlling blood pressure, increase appetite and helping with Fibromyalgia and M.E symptoms.

Again, like the daytime tea, the night-time tea bags include a lot of weight loss ingredients. Surprisingly, there isn’t Senna in these tea bags (like there is in the original teatox tea bags), which makes me think that I won’t be dashing off to the toilet every 3 minutes.

Claims

  • Feeling more awake and have more energy
  • Reduce bloating
  • Helps fall asleep faster
  • Weight loss
  • Speeds up your metabolism

Packaging

I Put 3 Different Detox/Weight Loss Products To The Test - Is It All Just A Scam? - www.brookeclarke.com

The two teas (the daytime and the nighttime) came in a sturdy, cardboard box. Inside the box, each of the two teas came packaged in a white, plastic air tight bags.

Each of the bags have clear instructions written on the back, with the list of ingredients also printed along side it.

I actually like how the tea bags are packaged in the bags, instead of the usual square cardboard boxes you get. I also am really happy that it’s tea bags, and not loose tea. Definitely makes it easier to travel around with. Since I work in a pub, my shift patterns are all over the place. With the tea being in tea bags, it meant I could throw one into my bag and not have to worry about scraping loose tea out the bottom.

The teabags themselves are made from a sort of mesh texture, rather than the usual thin ‘paper’. I did see that visually, they seemed to infuse into the water faster compared to a usual teabag.

Instructions

Daytime tea – ‘Drink every morning when you wake up. If you forget, just drink when you get the chance. In a cup, place one tea bag, fill with near boiling water then leave to infuse for 3 minutes before drinking.’

Nighttime tea – ‘Drink every other night before bed (starting day 1) for the duration of the teatox. In a cup, place one tea bag, fill with near boiling water then leave to infuse for 3 minutes before drinking.’

I definitely left my tea bag to infuse longer for 3 minutes. Whenever I drink tea, I just pop the tea bag in the mug, and then leave it in there until I’ve finished the cup, meaning my teabags were sitting in my mug for 10 minutes.

Obviously, the longer you leave the tea bag to infuse, the stronger the tea will be (flavours and side effects/results), so if you find that you’re more sensitive to some of the ingredients, I would recommend sticking to the recommended 3 minutes.

Look & Taste

Daytime Tea – When I first poured in the hot water into my mug, I was quite taken back by the dark, purple/black colour that first appeared. After around 2-3 minutes, the dark water changed into a pink/red colour which looked a hell of a lot more appealing.

The tea tasted exactly how I expected – berries and red fruit. I really liked the taste of it, but I could see how someone who doesn’t particularly like the taste of herbal teas may not like this.

Nighttime Tea – I thought I had taken a photo of this one, but it seems I accidentally deleted it. The nightime tea was a yellowy, orange colour – sort of the colour of a weak orange squash.

This tea definitely took a little longer to get used too. It smelled amazing, but for the first few cups of the nighttime tea, I found myself having to chug the whole mug as the flavour wasn’t for me. After about a week in, I found that I could actually start to enjoy it. I’m really not a big honey fan, and this definitely was the most overpowering flavour. If you like marzipan, I’m pretty sure you’d love it. It just definitely wasn’t my favourite.

Final Thoughts and Feelings

After drinking a total of 21 cups of detox tea, I’ve finally made my mind up.

The Bootea Sunshine Edition did absolutely nothing. I still had period pain, bloating, tiredness, acne and I’m the exact same weight as I was before.

Even though I’m glad they didn’t add Senna in the tea, it does make me think that Senna was the only reason why so many people lost weight with the original. I also read up that in the original Bootea, one of the ingredients makes you wee more, meaning it is VERY easy to get dehydrated whilst taking it. I couldn’t find any ingredients in the Sunshine Edition Bootea that made you wee more, but please just remember to drink a lot of water when testing out a detox product.

On their website, it does say that apparently the teas have helped people curve their cravings for sweets and chocolate, but honestly? I think it made my cravings worse. I still went home after work and demolished several bars of chocolate – no shame.

I wouldn’t repurchase this due to the fact that it did nothing. If it did drastically drop in price, I’d possibly think about buying the Daytime tea again as I really liked the flavour or it, but I can safely say that other than adding to my daily liquid intake, the tea did nothing.

It’s no surprise that a lot of the ingredients in both coffees aid weight loss. Like the Bootea, I was also quite shocked to see that there was no ingredient that causes a laxative effect as usually products like these are full of them.

Packaging

Again, like the Bootea, the coffee came in white, air tight bags, but didn’t come in an outer cardboard box.

I am a big fan of the way this is packaged, and since it doesn’t have the extra cardboard, it makes me feel less guilty using it.

Instructions

  1. Drink one cup per day every morning for the duration of your 14 Day Plan.
  2. Use 2 teaspoons in a medium sized mug. Add hot water, stir thoroughly and enjoy!

Both the coffees are made the same way. I’m quite glad how the instructions are clear and easy as some use measurements in their directions.

Look & Taste

From a visual perspective, the coffee didn’t look appetising to me personally. I love really strong, dark coffee, and since I don’t drink milk, the fact it has ‘Cream Powder’ in it put me off slightly, but for the sake of the review, I tried to man up and drink the coffee. Give me a black coffee with 2 sugars in any day.

After the kettle had boiled, I added the water to my mug that contained two teaspoons of the coffee and gave it a stir. Online, a lot of people had called this a latte, but it was more of just a plain, slightly milky coffee.

The coffee itself infused in the water, but at the top of the mug, there was this tiny amount of ‘foamy’ milk which soon mixed in with the water.

Taste wise, things weren’t looking good. Honestly? I had two sips of the ‘Detox Coffee’ before I poured it down the sink. Imagine the weakest coffee in the world, mixed with 100 sweeteners.

I have quite a sweet tooth, but I couldn’t bring myself to drink a whole mug of the artificially flavoured dish water.

A few days later, I decided to give the ‘Skinny Coffee’ a go. Trying to forget how awful the ‘Detox Coffee’ tasted, I took another big gulp before again, throwing it down the drain.

Thoughts and Feelings

I honestly couldn’t recommend this to ANYONE.

Since I work in hospitality, I’m very used to trying different coffees, good and bad, and this had to be the worst coffee I have ever tasted in my whole entire life.

They should have definitely left out the ‘Cream Powder’ so that it was optional for the drinker to add milk (or another alternative) to it. The overpowering taste of sweetener needs to be removed, and finally, they need to make it actually taste like coffee and not a dirty puddle.

If you like bad tasting coffee and are still interested in buying the coffees, click HERE for the Detox Coffee, and HERE for the Skinny Coffee.

Conclusion About ‘Weight Loss’ & ‘Detox’ Products

Honestly, I think it’s all a load of BS.

Out of the three products, the Bootea definitely was my favourite by miles, but I can’t justify spending £20 on a tea for taste reasons only. Don’t get me wrong, the tea does have some really incredible ingredients in it, but I’d personally just stick to another herbal tea and a multi-vitamin.

The ingredients in the coffee don’t really impress me, and even if they did, I still wouldn’t be able to bring myself to drink them.

My advice to you all? Stick to the good ol’ fashioned way of losing weight and detoxing – drinking more water, cutting out junk food, exercising more etc.

As much as I would have loved these to be the miracle product that they’re made out to be, I definitely won’t be re-purchasing these anytime soon.
