I’ve struggled with acne for as long as I can remember. I was constantly Googling ‘how to get rid of acne overnight’. Turns out that it’s impossible. There isn’t a food, cleanser, cream or treatment that will banish your acne overnight. Sucks doesn’t it? I could never work out what the cause of my acne was. There wasn’t a single thing that seemed to be the cause of it, which made things a little bit more difficult for me. Luckily, I stumbled through a few different tips and tricks, and the combination of them all have really improved my acne. These tips haven’t banished my acne all together, but like Tesco says, every little helps.
Also, I thought it was worth noting that yes, every single person has different skin. What may work for me, may not work for you. That’s why there’s so many different types of skin care products out there on the market. As much as I’d love these all to work for you, there’s no guarantee that they’ll improve your skin the way they’ve improved mine. Worth a try though, hey?
Actually Removing All My Makeup
Sometimes, I don’t finished work until 1am. The last thing I wanted to do was spend 10 minutes in my bathroom, properly removing my makeup and cleansing my face. It wasn’t uncommon to find multiple bottles of micellar water, dotted around my room. I’m not saying the micellar water is the devil, but it’s definitely is when it comes to removing makeup single handily. Get yourself a proper makeup remover (yes, the one you have to use in the bathroom!). I adore the Superdrug Vitamin E Hot Cloth Cleanser at the moment. It’s creamy formula really helps to melt away makeup, but also hydrates my skin at the same time.
Double cleansing has become so popular recently, but, it’s one of those ‘beauty trends’ that makes sense. One cleanse to remove makeup and oils, and then a second cleanse to actually cleanse the skin.
Like I mentioned before, I love the Hot Cloth Cleanser by Superdrug, and then once I’ve removed all my makeup, I go in with the Bioré Baking Soda Anti-Blemish Cleansing Foam (read my full review of it HERE). It doesn’t make me face feel dry, or tight, but gives me that squeaky clean feeling.
Used A Cleansing Mitt
I can’t actually believe that it had taken me so long to try one of these out. The one I use is from Dermalogica (I got mine sent to me via Influenster, but they come with their Pre-Cleanse Balm). The idea behind them is that they really help to break down oils and dirt on your face, and properly deep clean out your pores. The mitt itself is a soft, rubber texture, so it doesn’t feel harsh or abrasive on your skin. I use mine with the Bioré Foam, but it also really helps to foam up normal cleansers.
Leaving My Face Wash On For 60 Seconds
Funnily enough, I actually learnt this trick from my July 2018 Lookfantastic Subscription Box. When talking about the First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser, they suggested letting it sit on your skin for a minute before washing off. Why have I not thought of this before?! Personally, I wouldn’t recommend leaving it on your face for more than 2 minutes, but it does make sense to let it sit there for a while and work its magic.
Used A Face Mask That My Skin LOVED, But My Acne HATED
I’ve spoken a LOT about face masks on my blog before. One’s I still use to this day, and one’s that didn’t work out so well for me (including a highly raved about mask!). My all time favourite face mask has to be the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask. It’s the ultimate acne fighting mask – especially when it’s teamed up with Apple Cider Vinegar. I reviewed the mask when I was only mixing it with water, but since using it with ACV, I love it even more. Just remember to hydrate your skin after using it, as I do find it a little drying.
Switched Up My Skin Care
It actually saddens me to say this, but myself and Pixi Glow Tonic have split up. Sorry Pixi, It’s me, not you. Skin’s a funny little thing and once you’ve used that product for a while, it’s time to call it a day. Honestly, I thought I was going to be 80 and still having that orange and green bottle sit on top of my makeup station. But, I made the decision that it was time to say goodbye and say hello to the Alpha H Liquid Gold. It’s a lot more expensive than the Glow Tonic, but it’s been so worth it. They both contain 5% Glycollic Acid, but since Liquid Gold has a lot less ingredients in it, it’s going to be a lot more concentrated. Out of everything, I think this has been one of the key things that have improved my acne.
Another thing I did was stop using moisturiser, and I replaced it with Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil. You can use the oil in conjunction with a moisturiser, but since I don’t have overly dry skin, I found that I didn’t need to.
Cleaned My Beauty Blender Everyday
Oh, the dreaded task of trying to wash a beauty blender. There was even that viral hack that went around that involved shoving it in your microwave for 30 seconds (spoiler alert: it was a load of bollocks). I feel like no matter how hard I try, I will never be able to fully clean my beauty blender. I could be sat at my sink for an hour, squeezing the foam egg until the cows come home, and there STILL would foundation coming out. Anyway, I’ve been taking on this delightful task daily. When I go into the bathroom to dampen my blender, I always makes sure I give it a little clean with Australian Body Care Tea Tree Skin Wash. Bacteria loves warm, wet places, so please make sure you’re washing/replacing your BB as often as you can.
