I’m soon to hit the ripe ol’ age of 21. I feel like now is the time I finally might have to adult, and stop binge watching Disney movies (definitely not going to stop doing that though).

20 Things To Start Doing In Your Twenties

  1. Learn to say no. This one I’m shockingly bad at. I’m such a people pleaser, and the thought of upsetting anyone by saying ‘no’ literally gives me the sweats. I’ll say yes to things I don’t necessarily agree with or even want to do, just so I don’t upset or put anyone in an awkward position. Saying that, if I believe strongly about a subject, then I will fight it until I’ve got my point across. I definitely need to take up lessons on how to say no, but how to say it nicely without blowing up.
  2. At least attempted to start saving. Yes, I know this is a boring one, but it’s really important. Most people in their twenties can drive and you never know when you’re going to need some back up money for when you drive into a pot hole and have to replace your tire. Since I work in hospitality, one of the advantages are getting tips. Every single penny I earn through tips, I pop it into a jar and keep that aside to pay of my car insurance yearly. I don’t find that I tend to notice it that much if I’m not physically taking it out of my purse and into the jar.
  3. Do things that scare you. Want to tell your aunt how you really feel about her slagging you off every time you see her? Do it. Feel like you deserve a pay rise? Just bloody ask already. Give blood, do a sky dive, walk across a bridge, stroke a dog, hold a snake… Whatever it may be that you’re scared of, give it a go. You never know what possibilities could arise after you concur your fear.
  4. Ditch bad friends. Stop hanging around with that bitch Stacey. You’re only being her friend because you’re scared of having no one else. I promise that having no friends over a large group of toxic friends is always the way to go.
  5. Put down your phone. Another one that’s aimed at me. Stop seeing everything through your phone (this is especially hard if you’re a blogger). Learn to live in the moment. The amount of things you’ve missed because you’ve been scrolling through Facebook for the 50th time that hour.
  6. Find a job you love. Ignore people if they say ‘you could be working somewhere much better than this’ or ‘I bet if you moved to that new place in town, you’d earn a load more money’. If you’re happy where you’re working, it won’t feel like work. Stop working in that certain career, just because you think it’ll make your parents happy. This is your life. Nobody else’s.
  7. Stop holding on to things that don’t make you happy. Still have that photo of you and your ex boyfriend on your desk? Bin it. Have a dress in your wardrobe that just reminds you of that time Stacey threw a drink over you? Donate it. Long story short, if you’re holding onto something that you think you should keep or something that you might wear in 10 years time, get rid of it. Replace it with something that truly makes you feel happy.
  8. Try to organise some part of your life. It may be your paperwork that needs a good sorting through, or even ‘that’ drawer that you throw everything in that doesn’t have a home, but you try to convince yourself that you need everything in there. Life will become so much easier if you’re organised. No more spending an hour trying to find a AAA battery.
  9. Experiment. Experiment with who you date. Experiment with food. Experiment with hair styles. Just bloody do it.
  10. Visit somewhere on your travel bucket listThere’s a reason that every Uni student seems to be travelling the world. When you’re 80 and looking back on your life, you’re not going to be thinking ‘I’m so glad I saved that money and didn’t go travelling’.
  11. Find a hobby you enjoy doing. For me, it’s definitely blogging. Before that, I had zero hobbies. When I first started at my old job, I remember that the head chef asked me what my hobbies were, to which I replied with ‘ehh… Does Netflix and eating count?’. No Brooke. No it does not.
  12. Learn to cook a single dish really well. It’s time to stop eating macaroni cheese out of the tin and finally learn how to cook something (and no, putting it in the microwave is not what I mean).
  13. Learn a new topic. It could be on the stars, it could be about SEO, it could be about how to plaster a wall, just learn something for Christ sake!
  14. Start ringing your family more. The older you get, the more you come to realise how your family is the best thing ever. Crazy, yes, but still are the best. Pick up the phone and ring your nan. Tell her how your day was. Ring your uncle and take him out for lunch. You never know how much time you really have to show people you love and care about them.
  15. Volunteer at least once. It doesn’t have to be something permanent, but even spending a day looking after animals at an animal sanctuary. Not only is it going to look good on your CV, but it’s also going to make you feel as if you deserve an extra glass of wine at dinner.
  16. Learn basic life skills. Changing a fuse in a plug. Cooking spag bowl from scratch. Learning how to manage your money. It may be boring, but it’ll save the 2am phone calls to your mum, asking for help.
  17. Start finding time to read more. I adore reading. I used to read so much when I was younger, but when I went into full-time work, I stopped. I’ve swapped watching shitty films on Netflix until 2am to reading a good book, and I’m loving every minute of it.
  18. Practice self care. Self care is so important, and people aren’t dedicating enough time for it. If you’re looking for an excuse to run yourself a nice hot bath, THIS. IS. IT.
  19. Try to find environmentally friendly alternatives. Did you know that every single plastic toothbrush that has ever been made is STILL on the planet? There are some really cheap, but fab alternatives on Amazon like these bamboo toothbrushes.
  20. Make that bloody doctors appointment that you’ve been putting off for months. Yes, you really do need to get that rash checked.
  21. Stop following the rules. See what I did there?
