Wherever you travel you will find souvenir shops selling tacky items to remind you of your trip. Around your home, they will not look good and there are much better ways to help you recall some of the wonderful places you have been to. It takes a bit of planning so you know exactly what to look for while you are away, but the right things can be an important part of your décor as well as being the reminder you wanted.
Maps can look really good hanging on your wall. They come in many different sizes as well as modern ones and old world maps. You could mark each place you visited before you hang it on your wall, and then it will be easy to see just how far you travelled.
A throw over your sofa can alter the whole look of a room and be a perfect way to recall somewhere you have been. Different countries have different styles and you can get the feel you want with a Kantha throw. The range of colours and sizes means there is something to suit everyone. They also make an ideal gift if you want to give something a bit special.
Collect postcards with views of everywhere you visit and hang them on a wall in your home. You could arrange a lot of them in one large frame, or have a smaller one for each place. Some people do not bother with frames at all and just arrange the postcards to look good straight on the wall.
The beauty of a postcard gallery is that it can be made to fit in with any décor, whether they are framed individually, in one large frame or left without any frame at all.
Messages in Jars
If you really want to buy some cheesy souvenirs, why not make them look like a more intentional and beautiful part of your decor by placing them inside jars? You can very easily place more than one small item in a jar with a post from the place you want reminding of. Put a small label on the back to tell you the year you went, and you can make a great display of messages in jars.
Modern suitcases are not quite so good for this, but the older styles are perfect. Scour the second-hand shops for old suitcases that can be ideal. Cut the front 6 or 7 inches and fix it to the wall as a shelf. Then when you visit anywhere you can buy the stickers that are always available with the place name on, and put them on the suitcase. This may feel a bit like cheating because it is not the suitcase you used, but it can be very effective and the stickers will act as the reminder.
When you have travelled extensively, whether that is in your home country or abroad, it is very easy for the memories to start to fuse into one. Having gentle reminders of what you saw and did in different places can be a great way to prevent this from happening.
