There are so many reasons people go travelling. Some people want to experience new cultures, others just love the idea of laying by the pool for a week, and then there are the adventurers. Adventurous travellers are always looking for their next adrenaline fix, whether it’s climbing mountains or swimming with sharks. If you’re more of an adventurous traveller, then you’re going to love these recommendations for the ultimate adrenaline-filled getaways.
I’ve been wanting to head to Sri Lanka ever since I left sixth form, and it’s been on my bucket list ever since. While it’s a beautiful place to just lay on the beach if you want to, it’s also ideal for those seeking adventure. You can work in an animal sanctuary, go whale spotting, explore caves, hike through the lush jungle, and even swim with sharks. What’s not to love about this little slice of paradise?
If you want to combine your love of adventure with a love for animals, South Africa is the place to be. Of course, it’s probably most famous for its safari experiences, but that’s not all. Here you’ll find some of the best spots to swim with sharks, bungee jumping, and hiking up the incredible Table Mountain. Plus, when you want to wind down a little, you can head on a vineyard tour through the Winelands. Bliss.
Since 2006, the number of Australians heading to Bali has risen by a huge 546%. You know that Aussies love an adventure and this is definitely the place to go if you do too. A lot of people assume Bali is all about peaceful beaches and temples, but it’s so much more than that. Did you know, for example, you can actually camp in the jungle on the island of Bali? Yep, that’s a thing.
When you’ve finished meeting the monkeys or surfing in Kuta, you can visit one of the many meditation and wellness retreats to unwind.
It seems as though all of my adventure destination recommendations have something to do with animals… and Borneo is no different. The incredibly biodiverse rainforest here is somewhere that should be on everyone’s bucket list, especially as you can get up close and personal with some truly stunning wildlife. If you’re feeling brave, attempt the two-day climb to the top of Mount Kinabalu, but make sure you know what you’re doing because this is definitely no beginner’s mountain.
Most of the places on my list have been hot, hot, hot, so let’s add a cold one into the mix for good measure. Finland is the kind of place you can have some utterly epic adventures, whether it’s snowmobiling across the land or being pulled along by huskies. Of course, one of the biggest draws to Finland is also the Northern Lights. Head out at night and, if you’re really lucky, you might catch a glimpse of this stunning natural phenomenon.
It was really hard just keeping this list down to five, but I think these recommendations will give you a good mix of adventure activities.
What do you think? Where’s at the top of your bucket list for adventure? Let me know in the comments.
